  1. I suspect most of you know Maclean from the Robert Redford movie 'A River Runs Through It' which is a pretty fair appreciation for the lost American culture that produced this artistry. He had already retired when I reached the University of Chicago, but I still have a signed copy of. the iconic book, given to me as a graduation present. The English department had already begun it's descent into gender studies, and I was bluntly told that my prospects for tenure in this crowd were nil. (The D.E.I. crowd hasn't reserved a spot for Calvinist Jews that shoot and sail...?) You can imagine my surprise to learn that a biography has appeared, anodyne for those who haven't been sufficiently marinating in toxic American decline.
