A Makeover For 'Aïda?' Revisiting a Met Repertory Staple - WQXR

  1. "It looks like the Met is cutting back on makeup. This does not work for soloists and some adjustments need to be made for the supers. This was the whitest Egyptian army I have ever seen, many almost alabaster or ivory under the pellucid light. If the Met is going to eschew body makeup, it should hire more persons of color to be the supers for this opera.

The Aïdas themselves have gotten paler through the years. If the artist cast is not African-American or in some other way dark-skinned, makeup should be used."

Even in the absurd world of opera criticism, this is a masterpiece, worthy of The Onion or the Daily Mash. I should suppose we could make this into a minstrel show, to suit the libtard sensibilities at work here.
