"Irregular mosaic shapes, similar to what Dr Shechtman was seeing, are found in the medieval Islamic mosaics of the Alhambra Palace in Spain." the BBC helpfully notes, lest this be a complete Zionist triumph.
I wasn't too impressed by the quasicrystals or perhaps it was the article that was at fault. I am grateful for my teflon frying pan, and improvements in deisel engines could be good, but where is the real contribution to humanity? Likening the qualicrystals to the Alhambra Palace is absurd. I have toured the palace, and perhaps some of the mosaics were deliberate, but none were Arabic forerunners of the qualicrystals! That reference was used to spice up an otherwise dry article. Now, I do not know if Dr. Shechtman really should have accepted the prize.
