Salome - John's Head will roll....

  1. I think that Maria Ewing does an excellent, and scandalous dance for her step-father, Herod. It really goes over-the-top, when she finally disrobes during this most erotic dance , mainly for John the Baptist's head. He has previously spurned her and he is awaiting possible execution in prison, and her passions as a woman scorned steam up the dance quite a bit. For some time now, Salome revels in kissing the lips of the prophet. When his head is delivered to her after the dance, Salome grabs it and kisses the pallid lips repeatedly. Herod becomes discusted and he orders Salome to be slain. Maria Ewing does a fine and daring job with this Strauss piece, as she dances like the true seductress that Salome is. She is also quite manipulative, and, ultimately her charms do not work on Herod. Jim, if you no longer want me to contribute to the blog and to leave room for others, I will gladly comply. Just drop me a message...Thanks!

  2. Grateful for your contributions, and apologies if I don't manage to respond all the time promptly - it's hard trying to run it on a cell phone....

  3. Re: Salome...the scene when she kisses the decapitated head is one of the most disturbing in all of opera, a masterpiece of morbid psycho-sexual horror.
