First of all, I have never thought of wolves as "mystical" animals. I also do not think that the numerous dogs are at fault. I have never heard of a dog attacking an animal except for a very wild dog like the dingo. Possibly the shepherds have to be more vigilant. I suggest a forced migration of the dogs to Paris where they can dine in the best restaurants, and the people down south will discover that it is the wolves that are at fault. I also do not think that the farmers are tolerating this experience because they are being compensated by the government for every sheep killed. Farmers tend to be attached to their animals and I seriously doubt that the French farmers differ and could possibly be so mercenary. I am very glad that the problem is being addressed by the French, and my heart goes out to the dogs and the sheep.
The article is a tad mendacious - the EU pays a premium for sheep slaughtered by wolves...I share your skepticism about 'wild dogs'...you never see this in Europe....and even in Latin Am, where I do see packs of feral dogs, they're miserable starving animals, incapable of anything, apart from rooting though trash.
