Renée Fleming: Casta Diva (Bellini)

  1. Renee Fleming did justice to this bel canto aria by Bellini. The only unrealistic thing is that Fleming is so beautiful that it is difficult to imagine her being thrown over by Pollione for Adalgisa. The way Fleming sang "Casta Diva" was beautiful yet haunting, perfect for a Celt. Also, I noticed a lot of flute playing and a harp, and the flute and harp are often found in Celtic music. It is interesting that Norma dies with her lover, normally a romantic act, but I believe that she was still cross with him at this time because he would not denounce his relationship with Adalgisa. Overall, it was a very enjoyable piece, performed by a remarkable woman and I look forward to more from Jim's Jeremiad-:).
